With 2020 presidential campaigns in full swing, many of our clients have been asking which candidates support the Never Forget the Heroes Act. Below is a list of all 2020 presidential candidates, and a note about whether they support the Never Forget the Heroes Act. We also note if the candidate voted for the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2010 and if they sponsored its 2015 reauthorization. Many of the candidates have never had the opportunity to vote for any of the 9/11 benefit legislation.
- President Donald Trump (R) filed to run for re-election in 2020 on January 20, 2017. President Trump never held elected office prior to serving as President of the United States. The Citizens for Extension of the James Zadroga Act requested comment during the 2016 election, but did not receive a response. President Trump has not commented on the Never Forget the Heroes Act.
- Cory Booker (D), U.S. Senator from New Jersey, announced that he was running for president on February 1, 2019. Senator Booker is a sponsor of the Never Forget the Heroes Act and sponsored reauthorization of the Zadroga Act in 2015. He was not in office during the 2010 Zadroga Act vote.
- Pete Buttigieg (D), the mayor of South Bend, Indiana, announced that he was running for president on January 23, 2019. Mayor Buttigieg has not commented on the Never Forget the Heroes Act, and has never held elected office at the federal level.
- Julian Castro (D), a former U.S. secretary of housing and urban development and San Antonio mayor, formally announced his candidacy on January 12, 2019. Secretary Castro has not commented on the Never Forget the Heroes Act, and has never held elected office at the federal level.
- John Delaney (D), a former U.S. Representative from Maryland, filed to run for president on August 10, 2017. While serving as U.S. Representative from Maryland’s 6th District, Rep. Delaney sponsored the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Reauthorization Act. Rep. Delaney has not commented on the Never Forget the Heroes Act.
- Tulsi Gabbard (D), a U.S. Representative from Hawaii, announced that she had decided to run for president on January 11, 2019. Rep. Gabbard sponsors the Never Forget the Heroes Act, and sponsored the Zadroga Reauthorization Act in 2015. Rep. Gabbard was not in office during the 2010 Zadroga Act vote.
- Kirsten Gillibrand (D), a U.S. senator from New York, announced that she was forming an exploratory committee on January 15, 2019. She officially announced she was running on March 17, 2019. Senator Gillibrand sponsored the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, led the charge for reauthorization which was successful in 2015, and is leading the charge once again with the Never Forget the Heroes Act. Senator Gillibrand stands out as the most vocal proponent of benefits for 9/11 victims.
- Kamala Harris (D), a U.S. senator from California, announced that she was running for president on January 21, 2019. Senator Harris sponsors the Never Forget the Heroes Act. She was not in office in 2010 or 2015 for the votes on the Zadroga Act or its reauthorization.
- John Hickenlooper (D), a former governor of Colorado, announced that he was running for president on March 4, 2019. Governor Hickenlooper has not commented on the Never Forget the Heroes Act, and has never held federal elected office.
- Jay Inslee (D), the Governor of Washington, announced that he was running for president on March 1, 2019. Governor Inslee has not commented on the Never Forget the Heroes Act, and has never held federal elected office.
- Amy Klobuchar (D), a U.S. senator from Minnesota, formally announced she was running for president on February 10, 2019. Senator Klobuchar sponsors the Never Forget the Heroes Act, voted for the Zadroga Act, and sponsored its 2015 renewal. She was not in office during the 2010 Zadroga Act vote.
- Wayne Messam (D), the mayor of Miramar, Florida, announced he was forming an exploratory committee on March 13, 2019. Mayor Messam has not commented on the Never Forget the Heroes Act, and has never held federal elected office.
- Beto O’Rourke (D), former U.S. representative from Texas, formally announced he was running for president on March 14, 2019. Rep. O’Rourke is no longer in office, but did sponsor the Zadroga Reauthorization Act in 2015. He was not in office during the 2010 Zadroga Act vote.
- Tim Ryan (D), a U.S. Representative from Ohio, announced he was running for president on April 4, 2019. Rep. Ryan sponsors the Never Forget the Heroes Act, and sponsored the Zadroga Reauthorization in 2015. He was not in office during the 2010 Zadroga Act vote.
- Bernie Sanders (I), a U.S. Senator from Vermont, announced that he was running for president on February 19, 2019. Senator Sanders voted for the Zadroga Act in 2010, supported its 2015 reauthorization, and is a sponsor of the Never Forget the Heroes Act.
- Elizabeth Warren (D), U.S. senator from Massachusetts, announced she had formed an exploratory committee on December 31, 2018. She formally announced she was running for president on February 9, 2019. Senator Warren sponsors the Never Forget the Heroes Act, and sponsored the Zadroga Reauthorization Act in 2015. She was not in office during the 2010 Zadroga Act vote.
- Bill Weld (R), a former governor of Massachusetts, announced that he had formed an exploratory committee on February 15, 2019. Governor Weld has not commented on the Never Forget the Heroes Act, and has never held federal elected office.
- Marianne Williamson (D), an author and lecturer, announced she was running for president on January 28, 2019. Williamson has never held elected office and has not commented on the Never Forget the Heroes Act.
- Andrew Yang (D), an entrepreneur and author from New York, filed to run for president on November 6, 2017. Yang has never held elected office and has not commented on the Never Forget the Heroes Act.
