Quick Overview

Sep. 6, 2025: As of this week, 3,767 people who died, including 2,388 responders, had cancer. The total eclipses the 2,977 people killed on 9/11.

Nearly 25 years after September 11, 2001, the health consequences for first responders and survivors continue to grow. As of this week, nearly 3,800 members who died, including 2,388 responders, had been diagnosed with cancer. This means that the total number of people who have died from 9/11-related cancer is now larger than the 2,977 people who were killed on 9/11.

According to recent reports, nearly 50,000 people have now been diagnosed with a 9/11-related cancer. This staggering figure underscores the long-lasting toll of the toxic dust, smoke, and debris that blanketed Lower Manhattan in the days and weeks following the attacks.

For many, these diagnoses are only surfacing decades later. As doctors and researchers have documented, exposure to the World Trade Center site has been directly tied to dozens of cancers and serious medical conditions. For survivors and first responders, the financial, physical, and emotional challenges of these diagnoses are immense, but programs like the Victim Compensation Fund (VCF) exist to provide critical support.

Ben Chevat, Executive Director at 9/11 Health Watch, emphasized that continued WTCHP funding is essential to meet the evolving needs of the 9/11 community, noting “the continuing growing numbers of responders and survivors that have 9/11 cancers approaching 50,000, with reports of emerging conditions with unexpected increased incidences among the program population.” He explained that without sustained resources, the program cannot keep pace with the mounting health challenges faced by responders and survivors.

The Alarming Rise in 9/11 Cancer Diagnoses

In the years immediately following 9/11, respiratory illnesses and PTSD were the primary health concerns. But as time passed, it became clear that toxic exposure at Ground Zero would have a far broader impact. Today, cancer is the largest category of 9/11-related health conditions.

Nearly 50,000 individuals, including firefighters, police officers, construction workers, volunteers, office employees, and downtown residents, have been diagnosed with 9/11-related cancers. These include common cancers like skin cancer, prostate cancer, and breast cancer, as well as rare and aggressive cancers such as mesothelioma and pancreatic cancer.

This rise reflects both the sheer number of people exposed and the delayed nature of cancer development. Many survivors only began to experience symptoms 10 to 20 years later, making continued monitoring and early detection critical.

Covered Cancers and Conditions

The World Trade Center Health Program and the Victim Compensation Fund recognize dozens of cancers as linked to 9/11 exposure. These include:

  • Lung cancer
  • Leukemia and other blood cancers
  • Breast cancer (male and female)
  • Prostate cancer
  • Thyroid cancer
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Mesothelioma

Importantly, once a condition is certified by the WTC Health Program, victims become eligible for financial compensation through the VCF.

Maximum Pain and Suffering Awards for Multiple Cancers

For those diagnosed with multiple cancers, the Victim Compensation Fund acknowledges the compounding nature of the illness. The VCF has established maximum awards for pain and suffering in these cases:

  • Single Cancer: $250,000 maximum
  • Multiple Cancers: $250,000 to $340,000 (rare – most severe cases)

This framework ensures that victims facing the compounded burden of multiple cancers are recognized appropriately in their claims.

Why the Number of 9/11 Cancer Cases Will Keep Growing

While nearly 50,000 cases have already been confirmed, medical experts expect the number to increase in the coming years. Cancer often has a long latency period, and many 9/11 responders and survivors are just now reaching the age where certain cancers become more common.

Additionally, not all exposed individuals have come forward to enroll in the WTC Health Program or to pursue claims through the VCF. Some may be unaware of their eligibility, while others may mistakenly assume they do not qualify because they were not first responders. In reality, many groups, including downtown office workers, residents, and students, are eligible.

Financial Relief Through the Victim Compensation Fund

A 9/11 cancer diagnosis is not only physically and emotionally devastating; it can also create enormous financial strain. Victims may face lost wages, diminished earning capacity, costly medical treatments, and the challenges of ongoing care.

The Victim Compensation Fund provides 9/11 benefits for:

  • Pain and suffering
  • Lost wages and benefits
  • Out-of-pocket medical expenses not covered by insurance
  • Survivor benefits for families who lost loved ones

Since its inception, the VCF has awarded billions in compensation to thousands of claimants.
