Today marks the 19th anniversary of the September 11th attacks, the deadliest single instance of terrorism in history.
At Pitta & Baione, our VCF attorneys have dedicated their careers to helping people whose lives were forever changed during one of the darkest days in our country’s history. Combined, we have decades of legal experience to help people get the full benefits available under the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund and the World Trade Center Health Program. Our law firm has a strong track record of success for the people that we represent.
It is crucial for responders and survivors to seek the advice of an experienced 9/11 benefits lawyer as soon as possible. VCF benefits are distributed on a “first come, first served” basis and come with several strict deadlines.
Benefits Programs for 9/11 Responders and Survivors
The federal government created a pair of benefits programs for 9/11 responders and survivors: The World Trade Center Health Program and the Victim Compensation Fund.
The WTCHP focuses on healthcare benefits. That includes medical monitoring for a wide variety of physical and psychological conditions believed to be related to the attacks, as well as medication and treatment. The benefits are provided at no cost through a network of clinics in New York, New Jersey and throughout the country.
The VCF provides financial compensation to responders, survivors and their families. The money is meant to compensate for economic losses associated with the attacks, including missed wages, earning capacity reductions, out of pocket medical costs and pain, suffering and emotional distress. Although the VCF claims process is designed to be non-adversarial, a seasoned attorney can provide vital assistance. Approximately 90 percent of claimants are represented by a VCF attorney, who charges a 10 percent fee that is capped by law.
Many responders and survivors were injured by exposure to toxic dust created by the attacks. They are required to show that they were within a particular exposure zone at the time of or in the aftermath of the attacks to get benefits under either the WTCHP or VCF program. An experienced attorney can help you explore your eligibility for benefits.
