The COVID-19 pandemic has been classified as a war. Our #HealthcareHeroes have been referred to as our troops fighting this viral enemy on the front lines, putting themselves in harm’s way to help victims of the pandemic. Elected officials at all levels of government have drawn this comparison.

Our warriors in this life and death battle are the incredible doctors and nurses and health care workers on the frontline of the fight. – President Donald Trump

The President said this is a war. I agree with that. This is a war. Then let’s act that way, and let’s act that way now. And let’s show a commonality and a mutuality and a unity that this country has not seen in decades, because the Lord knows we need it today more than ever before. – New York Governor Andrew Cuomo

If we’re fighting a war, let’s act like we’re fighting a war. – Mayor Bill de Blasio (in declaring April 5, 2020 as the ”D-Day” of New York City’s COVID crisis, and calling for a military style draft of healthcare workers.)

In honor of our city, state, and nation’s #HealthcareHeroes, we created a flag inspired by wartime service flags for their families to display in their windows or on their social media pages, or wherever else they see fit. If this is a war, then our troops should be recognized accordingly. Thank you to all the physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, hospital staff, medical assistants, EMTs, paramedics, firefighters, emergency service workers, mortuary workers, and all other healthcare workers on the frontlines.

Of course, also thank you to all the law enforcement officers keeping us safe during this time of vulnerability, transit workers keeping our city moving, and sanitation workers keeping our streets clean…and to all essential workers including government employees, delivery workers, drivers, operating engineers, union and benefit fund staff, maintenance workers, electricians, court clerks, and all others helping us in this time of need.

To ensure the safety of those who wish to display, the flag is available for printing at home in PDF and JPEG, and for social media in both tile and story sizes. Should there come a time when we can safely order prints, we will update this post.
